Recovery of Formaldehyde from an Aqueous Stream

Formaldehyde is a central building block in the synthesis of many compounds. It exhibits most of the chemical properties of other aldehydes but is more reactive. An aqueous solution of formaldehyde can be useful as a disinfectant as it kills most bacteria and fungi (including their spores). It is also used as a preservative in vaccinations. Formaldehyde solutions are applied topically in medicine to dry the skin, such as in the treatment of warts. Many aquarists use formaldehyde as a treatment for the parasite ichthyophthirius. In some of the agrochemicals manufaturing also we can get the dilute aqueous solution of Formaldehyde.

As per industrial practice, the aqueous stream is treated with alkali to degrade formaldehyde & then the aqueous stream is fed to the effluent treatment plant. Thus valuable formaldehyde is lost.

Geist has developed a Novel Extraction technology to recover Formaldehyde from the aq. stream. Formaldehyde is reacted with water immiscible alcohol to get the hemiformal, which gets extracted in the organic phase. Hemi formal is then decomposed to get formaldehyde & alcohol. The process will give saleable quality of Formaldehyde which can generate revenue.
